The streamer’s adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s novel, published in 2014, tells the story of a blind teenager and a German soldier whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of the Second World War.

Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment (Stranger Things) will produce, with Levy to direct all episodes, while the series will be written by Steven Knight, the creator and writer of hit BBC drama Peaky Blinders.

Levy has announced a worldwide casting search for the lead role, with actresses who are blind or low vision especially encouraged to apply.

Levy, Dan Levine and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment will serve as executive producers on the series alongside Knight. Joe Strechay (See, The OA) will serve as associate producer, blindness and accessibility consultant.

In related news, Netflix is gearing up to launch Sex: Unzipped, a comedy special produced by Fulwell 73. Focusing on sex positivity and hosted by US rapper Saweetie, it will debut globally on October 26.

Saweetie will be joined by sex experts, talking heads and a crew of sex-positive puppets who are representative of the broad spectrum of sex and sexualities to help address and describe some of the biggest myths, misconceptions and experiences relating to sex and identity.

Talking heads include Dominique Jackson, Ian Karmel, Joel Kim Booster, Katherine Ryan, London Hughes, Mae Martin, Michelle Buteau, Nikki Glaser, Romesh Ranganathan, Sam Jay and Trixie Mattel.

It is written by Erika Ehler, Steve Parry and Nico Tatarowicz. The executive producers are Ben Turner, Gabe Turner, Emma Conway, while the showrunner is Spencer Millman and the producers are Saweetie, Saima Ferdows, Neil Kirby, Theresa Marth and Matt White. Brian Moses is a consulting producer.
