Netflix takes Beyond deal further

Netflix has acquired Australian/New Zealand rights to a raft of shows from Beyond Distribution as it prepares to launch its Australasian service on March 28.

The deal extends the US streaming giant’s relationship with the sales arm of Australian production outfit Beyond Entertainment.

Separately, Australian distributors Madman Entertainment, Transmission, Pinnacle and Rialto have confirmed library agreements with Netflix Australia/NZ.

The Beyond pact gives Netflix exclusive streaming rights in Australasia to local kids titles Lightning Point, the first three seasons of H2O: Just Add Water, the first of Mako Mermaid, plus Maya the Bee, Lalaloopsy and The Hive.

Internationally Netflix gets exclusive SVoD rights to Australian comedy specials Carl Barron: A One Ended Stick, Arj Barker: Harvest, Kitty Flanagan: Hello Kitty, Jimeoin: Something Smells Funny and Umbilical Brothers: The Rehearsal.

Those shows plus Beyond’s MythBusters will also air non-exclusively on the Antipodean service.

Beyond Distribution has previously sold MythBusters to Netflix for the UK, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Latin America, and North American rights to Wild Animal Baby Explorers and Ocean Girl.

Sean Carey, VP of content acquisition at Netflix, said: “The partnership with Beyond Distribution will bring Netflix members entertainment from local shores and abroad that we know they will spend many hours enjoying.”

Joanne Azzopardi, Beyond Distribution VP of sales for Australia and New Zealand, said: “Netflix has been a very successful platform for our content worldwide and we are thrilled to now be extending this relationship to include Australia and New Zealand.”
