Daniel Spellbound will debut on Netflix next year

Global streaming giant Netflix is working with Canada’s Boat Rocker Studios and Industrial Brothers on a CG animated adventure series set in a modern-day New York City where magic is real.

Daniel Spellbound (20×22′) comes from creator Matt Fernandes (Dino Ranch, Remy & Boo, Kingdom Force) and will premiere worldwide on the streamer in 2022.

Set in a world where magic is real but hidden from the public by sleight of hand and misdirection, it follows Spellbound as he makes a living selling rare goods to sorcerers and wizards for their spells.

But when he discovers a strange ingredient, he catches the attention of dangerous alchemists and he suddenly must test his skills on an adventure around the globe, while the magical world hangs in the balance.

The series is produced in partnership with its creator and director Fernandes, who will serve as executive producer.

The other executive producers will be Industrial Brothers’ Arthur Spanos and Tammy Semen and Boat Rocker Studios’ Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Jon Rutherford and Chapman Maddox.

Fernandes, creative director and co-founder of Boat Rocker-owned Industrial Brothers, said: “I wanted to create a contemporary fantasy world that reflected urban culture, not just set in a magical world, but where the magic is woven into the fabric of modern society, only hidden in plain sight.

Rutherford, president of Boat Rocker Studios Kids & Family and Rights, recently spoke to C21 Digital Screenings about getting serialised animated shows for kids off the ground with streamers.

The series joins Netflix’s growing slate of original animated programming for kids and families.

These include upcoming animated series Kid Cosmic from Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Arlo the Alligator from Ryan Crego, City of Ghosts from Elizabeth Ito, Centaurworld from Megan Nicole Dong and limited event series Maya & the Three from Jorge Gutierrez.
