Netflix rides off with Dark Horse

The Umbrella Academy

US streamer Netflix has signed a first-look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment, the production arm of comic book publisher Dark Horse Comics.

The agreement gives Netflix a first refusal on Dark Horse’s IP for film and TV, with future content to be produced by Dark Horse president Mike Richardson, senior VP Keith Goldberg and Paul Schwake.

The deal follows a previous collaboration between the pair on action/comedy series The Umbrella Academy, which was recently renewed for a second season. They also recently collaborated on Jonas Åkerlund’s crime drama feature film Polar, which was released on Netflix in January.

Universal Cable Productions, which paired with Dark Horse on The Umbrella Academy, previously had a similar first-look deal with the prodco.

“The Netflix teams are already working in deep collaboration with Dark Horse to identify projects beyond the world of traditional superheroes, branching into horror, fantasy and family entertainment, that we think our members will love,” said Cindy Holland, senior VP of original content for Netflix.
