Netflix returns to the Wild West with action-adventure series American Primeval

Netflix has given a six-episode order to the limited drama series American Primeval starring Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch (The Terminal List, Waco, Friday Night Lights).

Pete Berg (Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor) will direct and executive produce through his first-look deal with the streaming giant. Eric Newman (The Watcher, Narcos) will also exec produce under his overall deal with Netflix, while Mark L Smith (The Midnight Sky, The Revenant) will write all episodes and serve as exec producer.

American Primeval is described as a “raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West” where men and women fight and die for control of a world in which cultures, religions and communities collide.

The project marks the second collaboration between Berg, Newman and Kitsch after they collaborated on the upcoming Netflix limited series Painkiller, set to debut next year.

Berg is exec producing through his Film 44 banner, while Newman is exec producing through his company Grand Electric.

“American Primeval is a portrait of the American West unlike any other – raw, thrilling, action-driven and brought to life by a tapestry of emotionally compelling characters led by the talented Taylor Kitsch,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s VP of scripted series, US and Canada.

“We’re excited to explore new depths of this genre as we grow our creative partnership with the extraordinary Pete Berg at the helm backed by the deft storytelling vision from Eric Newman and Mark L Smith.”
