Netflix has picked up the worldwide streaming rights to Image Nation Abu Dhabi’s recent Emirati feature film Rattle the Cage and is eyeing up an original film starring Will Smith.

Rattle the Cage, the feature directorial debut of Emirati filmmaker Majid Al Ansari, tells the story of a man trapped in a prison cell who is forced to play a madman’s game in order to save his family’s lives.

StudioCanal has also acquired theatrical distribution rights to the psychological thriller for Germany and the UK. Vox will release the film theatrically in the Middle East.

IM Global took on international sales rights (excluding Germany, the UK and the Middle East) on the deal through its foreign-language label IM Global Anthem on behalf of the filmmakers. Cinetic Media oversaw US sales rights.

Netflix, which earlier this month announced a US$5bn programme budget, is reportedly leading the case to buy the rights to Will Smith’s forthcoming feature film Bright.

According to numerous reports, the US SVoD service is outbidding other studios for the movie, which will star Smith as a human cop who teams up with an orc.

If the deal goes ahead, it is rumoured a budget of between US$80m and US$100m is being put forward. The film would follow in the footsteps of other original Netflix features including Beasts of No Nation and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Sword of Destiny.
