Netflix picks up Sony Pictures Television dramedy Yo no soy Mendoza for Latin America

Mexican dramedy Yo no soy Mendoza is produced in Colombia

Netflix has acquired Mexican series Yo no soy Mendoza for Latin America in a deal with Sony Pictures Television (SPT).

Based on the final creation by late Colombian screenwriter and producer Fernando Gaitán (Ugly Betty), Yo no soy Mendoza is a 40×45’ dramedy set in Mexico but produced in Colombia. It stars Vadhir Derbez, Laura Londoño, Lucho Velasco, and Elyfer Torres.

The show centres on a debt collector forced to assume the identity of the president of a major bankrupt casino located in Mexico City, and thus marry his fiancée.

Alejandro García exec produces the series alongside Carlos Quintanilla, who is also the project’s creative director. It was developed by Miguel García Moreno, Mariana Palos, Alejandra Rodríguez, Luis Gamboa and Celia Kim.

John Rossiter, exec VP of distribution, channels and production for Latin America at SPT, said: “With its blend of drama, humour and complex storytelling, Yo no soy Mendoza is poised to captivate audiences and pay tribute to Gaitán’s enduring legacy on television. We can’t wait for viewers across the region to meet these unforgettable characters.”

The project received the CINA (Audiovisual Investment Certificate) incentive granted by the Colombian government and administered by Proimágenes Colombia, which consists of a tax discount equivalent to 35% of the expenditure on audiovisual services in the country.

Yo no soy Mendoza was the last work by Colombian screenwriter Fernando Gaitán before his sudden death in 2019.
