Netflix orders social distance anthology

Global streamer Netflix is launching an anthology drama series about living under social distancing rules from the team behind Orange is the New Black.

Queen Sono was Netflix’s first African original

Social Distance comes from the creative team behind the Netflix prison drama and will be scripted and shot with crews working remotely, while the cast film themselves.

Exec producing are Tara Herrmann, Hilary Weisman Graham and Blake McCormick.

In a statement released on Twitter, the exec producers said: “Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance.

“We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through – the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together.

“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. And we hope that Social Distance will help people feel closer to one another.”

In related news, the streamer has also renewed its first African original series, Queen Sono, for a second season. The six-parter, starring Pearl Thusi in the title role, was Netflix’s first script-to-screen original production on the continent.

In the second season, Queen will search for the truth as her newfound need for revenge takes her on a mission across Africa – all while she deals with her family’s past and her complicated love life. Johannesburg’s Diprente Films is the production company.

Dorothy Ghettuba, head of African original series at Netflix, commented: “The first season of Queen Sono marked the beginning of our journey to introduce the world to exciting stories that are made in Africa. It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television.”
