Netflix orders scripted comedy series inspired by life of rapper Vince Staples

Netflix has commissioned a scripted comedy series starring and executive produced by US rapper Vince Staples.

The Vince Staples Show is loosely inspired by Staples’ life, although details about the project are scarce, aside from the fact it takes place in Long Beach, California.

In addition to Staples, executive producers are Kenya Barris for Khalabo Ink Society, Ian Edelman, Maurice Williams, Corey Smyth and US filmmaker Calmatic.

Edelman and Williams will serve as co-showrunners. They have previously worked with Barris as executive producers on Kid Cudi’s animated Netflix project Entergalactic. Netflix also said that Calmatic will direct the first two episodes of The Vince Staples Show.

“It’s our mission to work with the best artists in the world,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy.

“Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians today and we’re really excited about how his sensibility – and sense of humour – will translate into a unique comedy series.”
