Netflix orders limited drama The Madness from Stephen Belber, Chernin Entertainment

Global streamer Netflix has given a series order to The Madness, a limited drama from creator Stephen Belber and Peter Chernin’s production company Chernin Entertainment.

Colman Domingo

The eight-part series will star Colman Domingo (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as a media pundit who must fight for his innocence after he stumbles upon a murder deep in the Poconos Woods in Pennsylvania.

Belber, whose credits include the TBS comedy O.G., is also executive producer and co-showrunner with VJ Boyd (Justified, S.W.A.T.). Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kaitlin Dahill are executive producers for Chernin Entertainment.

Also executive producing is Canadian filmmaker Clement Virgo (Greenleaf), who will direct and executive produce the first two and last two episodes. Quyen Tran (Maid) and Jessica Lowrey (Perry Mason) will each direct two middle episodes.

The project is being produced under Chernin Entertainment’s first-look deal with Netflix.

Chernin Entertainment is part of The North Road Group, the media and investment company launched last summer. Most recently, North Road raised an additional US$150m from the Qatar Investment Authority, meaning the company has now raised close to US$1bn.

Of the series, Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s VP of scripted series for the US and Canada, said: “The Madness is a fresh take on the conspiracy thriller – turning the genre on its head with its multi-layered characters, propulsive action and swift pace.”
