Netflix orders first Spanish original

US-based online streaming service Netflix has greenlit its first original Spanish-language series in the form of a comedy about football.

The 13-episode as-yet untitled show from director Gaz Alazraki’s production outfit Alazraki Entertainment is currently being filmed in Mexico and follows a family feud among heirs to a football club following the owner’s death.

The satirical series, which was created by Mike Lam, will premiere in 2015 and is being directed by Alazraki and the team that created Mexican comedy feature film Nosotros los Nobles.

“We formed a very special team for We Are the Nobles and we all knew we wanted to keep working together,” Alazraki said.

“Alazraki has the disruptive vision and creative storytelling we were looking for in producing our first original series in Mexico,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer.

Netflix is already available across Latin America having expanded into the region in 2011.
