Netflix names Indian originals boss

Netflix has appointed the head of content at Viacom18 Digital Ventures’ OTT service Voot as head of its international original series in India.

Monika Shergill

Monika Shergill takes over from US-based Simran Sethi, a director of international originals at Netflix, who recently left the global streamer.

Mumbai-based Shergill joined Viacom18, the joint venture between India’s TV18 and US media giant Viacom, in 2015. At Netflix, she will report to Bela Bajaria, who oversees all non-English-language content at the company.

Prior to arriving at Voot, former journalist Shergill led non-fiction programming and strategy at Star India . She has also held roles at Sony Entertainment Television and Zee TV.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has previously discussed his ambition to secure 100 million subscribers in India over the next few years.

The streamer bolstered its Indian offering in 2018 with local commissions for a drama set in Goa and eight movies, including one starring Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire).

Netflix’s Indian slate already includes forthcoming cricket drama Selection Day and Sacred Games, which has been extended into a second season. Two-thirds of viewers who have watched the latter are from outside of the country, according to Netflix.
