Netflix moves into Korean originals

Netflix is making its first South Korean original series, based on a popular local web cartoon.

Love Alarm, set to be released next year, is written by South Korean graphic novelist Chon Kye-Young.

Production of the 12-episode series will be led by Lee Jae-moon from Hidden Sequence, a newly launched production company.

The series will debut in 190 Netflix territories, including South Korea.

The potential for Netflix to expand its local originals strategy into South Korea was first mooted by CEO Reed Hastings in July.

The streamer has previously worked with Korean film director Bong Joon-ho to shoot a movie titled Okja.
