Netflix lines up Escobar drama

US subscription VoD giant Netflix has ordered a new original series about Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and the infamous Medellín Cartel, to debut in 2015.

Narcos, from director Jose Padilha and US-based Gaumont International Television, will be available to Netflix subscribers in all territories next year.

The 10-part series reunites Brazilian actor Wagner Moura (Escobar) with Padilha, after the duo worked together on Brazilian action films Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.

Narcos is exec produced by Padilha, Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard and Chris Brancato. It will be shot in Colombia.

On top of Netflix’s current roster of originals out this year, Narcos joins the third season of political drama House of Cards in 2015 and recently ordered Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda vehicle Grace & Frankie.
