Netflix, J.Lo agree film, TV deal

Netflix has agreed a multi-year first look deal with pop star and actor Jennifer Lopez and her production company, Nuyorican Productions.

Lopez and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, along with Lopez’s partner Benny Medina, will produce a slate of films and television series for the global streamer as part of the deal, financial details of which were not disclosed.

The slate will have an emphasis on scripted and unscripted projects that support diverse female actors, writers and filmmakers, the two companies said.

The first two projects to be announced by the companies are The Mother, which will star Lopez and be directed by Niki Caro (Mulan), and the film The Cipher, which is based on the novel by Isabel Ojeda Maldonado.

The Mother follows a deadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to teach her daughter how to survive. Lopez is currently training for the role with production set to begin this fall and scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2022.

It comes after Lopez’s English-language entertainment brand Fuse Media, which serves Latinx, multicultural millennial and Gen Z audiences, was taken over by a Latinx-led management group headed by the US company’s CEO, Miguel ‘Mike’ Roggero, late last year.

Earlier this year, NBC in the US cancelled its entertainment reality show World of Dance, starring and executive produced by Lopez, after four seasons.

Lopez said: “I believe there is no better home for us than a forward-leaning content creation company that seeks to defy conventional wisdom and directly market to the millions across the globe who no longer view art and entertainment with the kind of boundaries and limitations of the past.”

Scott Stuber, Netflix’s head of global films, said: “Throughout every aspect of her career, Jennifer Lopez has been a force in entertainment. In partnering with her and Nuyorican we know she will continue to bring impactful stories, joy and inspiration to audiences around the world.”

Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV, added: “Jennifer is a singular talent whose creativity and vision have captivated audiences and inspired the next generation around the world. For years she and the team at Nuyorican have brought a distinctive voice to entertainment, and I’m looking forward to working with her and the team to create new series for our members to love.”
