Netflix, ICI TOU.TV Extra skate off with Canadian rights to teen drama Finding Her Edge

Finding Her Edge centres on a figure skating dynasty

Netflix and CBC/Radio-Canada’s French-language streamer ICI TOU.TV Extra have picked up the Canadian rights to Finding Her Edge, the WildBrain-produced teen drama set in the world of competitive figure skating.

The live-action Canadian series, based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s novel of the same name and inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, will premiere in Canada on January 22.

The show was officially commissioned by WildBrain’s Family Channel in association with Netflix a year ago. Under the initial commissioning structure, Family Channel was to hold Canadian rights with Netflix taking the rest of the world.

However, WildBrain shuttered Family Channel, along with its entire broadcasting business, last year, with Netflix subsequently taking Canadian rights as well. Radio-Canada’s linear channel ICI TÉLÉ has also picked up the rights, with a launch date yet to be announced.

Finding Her Edge comes from showrunner and executive producer Jeff Norton (Geek Girl, The Small Hand), with Shelley Scarrow (Wynonna Earp, Degrassi: The Next Generation) serving as head writer alongside Sabrina Sherif (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Wild Cards), Norton and Jacqueline Pepall.

The show follows three sisters who are heirs to a struggling figure skating dynasty. While middle sister Adriana trains for the World Championships with new partner Brayden, she still harbours feelings for her first love and former partner, Freddie. Her life becomes more complicated when she and Brayden pretend to be a couple off the ice so they can land a sponsorship to keep the financially struggling Russo rink afloat.

The cast includes Madelyn Keys (A Mother’s Life, The Exchange), Harmon Walsh (Gossip Girl), Alexandra Beaton (Overcompensating), Cale Ambrozic (Hotel Cocaine) and Olly Atkins (Percy Jackson & The Olympians).

“Finding Her Edge showcases fantastic Canadian talent on both sides of the camera. I’m proud of what the cast and crew have built together, and I’m excited for viewers across Canada and around the world to meet the Russo sisters and follow Adriana’s journey on and off the ice,” said Norton.
