Netflix, DreamWorks take on dinosaurs

US video-on-demand service Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are to adapt an award-winning children’s book series as the next project under their overall production deal.

Dinotrux, based on Chris Gall’s books about hybrid dinosaur-construction characters and their fantastical world, will run for three seasons from spring 2015.

The first book in the series was named by Publishers Weekly as 2009’s Children’s Book of the Year.

Netflix will air the toon in the US and all its current international territories, which include the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada and parts of Latin America.

Netflix said it will also have rights for France and Belgium, two of the European territories the streaming service recently said it plans to enter this year. The others are Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

The two firms announced their partnership, Netflix’s largest original deal at the time, last June.

Under the deal, DreamWorks will develop more than 300 hours of exclusive programming based on DWA characters.

Series already announced under the production deal include King Julien, Puss in Boots and Veggie Tales in the House.

Last week Netflix announced it will debut 26 new episodes of classic kids series The Magic School Bus in 2016, to be produced by Scholastic Media. The Magic School Bus 360° will be a CGI toon aimed at school-age children.
