Netflix down under orders Jane Harper adaptation, crowns The Desert King

Delta Goodrem in romcom feature Love is in the Air

Netflix ANZ has commissioned a pair of original Australian drama series titled The Survivors and The Desert King.

The Survivors, produced by Tony Ayres Productions (TAP), is a crime mystery drama based on the novel of the same name by Jane Harper.

Set in the tourist seaside town of Evelyn Bay, Tasmania, it focuses on a community haunted by a natural disaster, three deaths and a lot of secrets.

TAP founder Tony Ayres said: “Jane Harper’s brilliant novel is a gift to adapt, because its clever murder-mystery plot is actually a Trojan horse for a deeper examination of how we live with the wounds that life inflicts on us. It’s about the cost of survival and how that impacts differently on men and women. I’m thrilled we are working with Netflix on this show, as its themes hit the sweet spot of being both distinctly Australian yet resonant and meaningful to a global audience.”

Meanwhile, The Desert King is a coproduction between Easy Tiger and Ronde Media. Created by Ronde founder Ben Davies and writer Tim Lee, it is set in Australia’s Northern Territory and revolves around succession planning among the billionaire Lawson family, who run the world’s largest cattle station.

Production on both shows is due to begin in the next few months, with further details on the scope, locations and budgets for the projects to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The productions join two other newly commissioned local Netflix originals. Documentary Onefour: Against All Odds centres on the controversial Oz rap group, while Love is in the Air is a romcom feature from Jaggi Entertainment, starring Delta Goodrem as a seaplane pilot seemingly falling for the wrong man.

“We’re excited about the variety and scope these new films and shows bring to our existing slate of homegrown stories,” said Netflix ANZ content director Que Minh Luu.
