Netflix cancels Friese, Odar supernatural series 1899 after one season

Supernatural show 1899 features a group of Europeans travelling to New York by ship

German supernatural mystery series 1899, from Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, has been cancelled by Netflix after one season.

The creators revealed the cancellation via social media today.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure,” said Friese and Odar.

The multilingual series, set in the year 1899 and following a group of Europeans travelling from Southampton, England to New York to start new lives, launched on Netflix on November 17.

The show, which appears on Netflix’s top 10 list of English-language series, garnered impressive viewing figures on launch.

In its first week, the show racked up 79.3 million hours of watch time, putting it in second position narrowly behind The Crown. The following week, viewership increased to 87.9 million hours, once again earning second position, this time behind the debuting The Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday.

In subsequent weeks, viewership fell to 44.6 million, 27.5 million and 17.9 million hours before dropping out of the top 10 chart in its sixth week.

Produced by Berlin-based Dark Ways, 1899 was the first project created by Friese and Odar under a multi-year series deal inked with Netflix in 2018. It was filmed in Germany and the UK and is reportedly one of the most expensive German series ever produced.
