Netflix burrows into global version of Belgian format hit The Mole

Anderson Cooper presented the US version of The Mole that ran on ABC between 2001 and 2008

Netflix is rebooting Belgian reality competition format De Mol (The Mole), with a new version set to launch worldwide on the streamer later this year following a deal with Primitives.

The 10-part series will be produced by LA- and Sydney-based Eureka Productions and will see 12 players work together on challenges to add money to a pot that only one of them will eventually win.

Among the players is one person who has secretly been designated as the mole, tasked with sabotaging the group’s money-making efforts. The person who outlasts their competition by exposing the mole wins the prize pot.

The deal was brokered by Siobhan Crawford, who departed Belgian distributor Primitives earlier this year.

The Netflix version, set to launch this fall, joins more than 20 international versions of the show, which is the most sold format from Belgium.

Since its launch in 1998, versions of The Mole have been produced in the US, on ABC, as well as in Germany and the Nordics. It is currently still on air in Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden. An Italian version for Mediaset is scheduled for 2023.
