Production will begin this summer on the fourth run, which will be made available in the same year as the next US presidential election takes place.

The third season was released online on February 27, after accidentally being leaked by the US streaming service more than two weeks before it was due to launch.

House of Cards, which stars Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey as ruthless politician Frank Underwood, marked Netflix’s entry into original series when it was released in 2013. Since then Netflix has commissioned shows including Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black and the revival of comedy series Arrested Development.

In related news, Netflix has greenlit Montauk, a 1980s drama series written and directed by filmmakers and brothers Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer (Wayward Pines)

The streaming service has ordered eight one-hour episodes to premiere next year across all territories.

Executive-produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, the series follows the mysterious disappearance of a young boy in the Long Island town.
