Netflix beefing up kids offering with new standalone app, additional greenlights

Ms. Rachel is among Netflix’s most watched shows

Netflix is looking to expand its kids content offering with the launch of Playground, a standalone app featuring series, films and games aimed at children aged eight and under.

Playground is included free of charge in all existing Netflix plans and launched on Monday in the US, Canada, UK, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, with a full global rollout set for April 28.

With the launch of the new app, Netflix has also commissioned and renewed several preschool series, including Young MacDonald, a new musical series that follows the grandson of Old MacDonald and his animal friends as they solve problems and learn about farm life, and ordered a third season of Trash Truck and additional episodes of The Creature Cases.

Netflix also set the release dates for several key kids shows, including season four of Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs (May 11), season one of My Sesame Street Friends: My Abby (April 27), season two of Dr Seuss’s Horton! (May 4), season seven of CoComelon Lane (April 20), season one of My Sesame Street Friends: My Elmo (April 13), season 56 of Sesame Street and season three of Ms Rachel (summer).

Kids content continues to be a major viewership driver on Netflix, which also carries properties such as Peppa Pig and Danny Go! According to data provided by the streamer, between 2023 and 2025, the four most-watched shows (as well as six of the top 10) were in the kids’ genre. Shows including Ms. Rachel, In Your Dreams, The Creature Cases, Trash Truck, Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs were also among the most-watched titles on the service in the second half of 2025.

“We’re building a world where kids can not only watch their favorite stories, they can step inside them and interact with their favorite characters,” said Netflix’s VP of animation series and kids and family TV, John Derderian.
