Netflix Australia undercuts rivals

Netflix will charge as little as A$8.99 (US$7.01) per month for its Australian service, which is due to launch this week.

The fee for a single, standard-definition feed undercuts rivals Stan, Presto Movies, Presto TV and Quickflix by one dollar.

A two-stream HD plan costs A$11.99 and a four-stream, 4K ultra-HD “family” package is A$14.99.

Following standard practice, Netflix is offering a free one-month trial and subscribers to telco Optus can get the service at no extra cost for six months as part of a 24-month plan.

Concurrently telco Telstra is offering its 600,000 T-Box customers a free six-month subscription to both Presto streaming services, which normally cost A$9.99 individually or A$14.99 combined.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and chief content officer Ted Sarandos will launch Netflix at a function in Sydney on Tuesday night.

The initial line-up includes House of Cards season three, Bloodline, Marco Polo, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Chelsea Handler: Uganda Be Kidding Me Live, DreamWorks Animation’s The Adventures of Puss in Boots and the documentary Virunga.

Seasons one and two of Orange is the New Black will be available at launch in advance of season three’s global premiere on June 12.

Meanwhile, dominant pay TV platform Foxtel, which owns Presto Movies and is partnered with Seven West Media in Presto TV, today revealed the pricing of its new set-top box iQ3.

Foxtel subscribers will pay A$125 for the unit plus A$25 for a self-installation kit or an extra A$75 for installation by a Foxtel technician. That compares with A$75 for the iQHD equipment, which was introduced six years ago.

Among its new features are a start-over function that allows viewers to go back to the beginning of a show that’s already started; scrolling back up to 24 hours to watch missed shows; more recording space for up to 345 SD shows; and the ability to record up to three shows at once while watching a fourth programme.
