Netflix Australia launch date mooted

The launch date of Netflix in Australia has been unofficially revealed in the country’s local media.

The US streaming giant announced it was making its foray into Australia and New Zealand in November with original series including Marco Polo and BoJack Horseman, and kids’ titles such as DreamWorks Animation’s All Hail King Julien.

The launch follows the Californian firm’s expansion into six European countries including France and Germany in September.

Aussie media site TechGuide is now reporting Netflix will make its foray into Australia on March 31. Sources familiar with the company also said that the service will be priced at A$9.99 (US$8)

Netflix, which was founded in 1997, has more than 53 million subscribers in at least 40 countries around the world.

The news comes amidst an arms race in the Australian SVoD market. Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media have partnered on joint venture StreamCo which, along with the forthcoming arrival of Netflix, has forced pay TV outfit Foxtel to slash the cost of its service.

Yesterday, Netflix renewed original series Marco Polo for a second season, despite mixed reviews following its debut last month.
