Nothing Special will be directed by Ilya Malanin, who writes the show alongside Mila Prosvirina, Shorena Patsia and Maria Panasyuk.

It follows an actor working on a play in the performing arts studio of a foundation that supports people with disabilities. Close communication with the group “shows him that every cloud has a silver lining and one can find humour where, it would seem, it is not possible, as well as love,” Netflix said.

Produced by Valerij Fedorovich, Evgenij Nikishov and Aleksandr Sysoev, its cast includes Yura Borisov, Paulina Pushkaruk, Daria Melnikova, Anton Sankevich and Olga Lomonosova.

The series will launch on Netflix worldwide on a yet-to-be announced date. It will join other Russian originals on the streamer including a recently commissioned psychological drama and a series based on Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina, which it is also making with Fedorovich and Nikishov.

Anna Nagler, Netflix’s director of local-language originals in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia, said: “Nothing Special is a beautiful story, so simple and yet so complex. It is told with incredible sensitivity and with an even greater sense of humour.

“This is a touching narrative relating how deep connections can appear if we allow ourselves the chance to get to know each other. We were charmed from the very start and trust the story will equally appeal to our Russian members.”

Fedorovich and Nikishov said in a joint statement: “Together with highly professional actors such as Yura Borisov and Daria Melnikova, newer talents – some of whom have disabilities – made this project really special. Their talent and charisma help us share a heartwarming, sympathetic story. It leaves nobody indifferent.”
