NENT’s Viaplay orders Swedish drama original starring The Bridge’s Sofia Helin

Sofia Helin in The Bridge

Nordic Entertainment (NENT) Group-owned streaming service Viaplay has commissioned a Swedish drama series starring The Bridge actor Sofia Helin.

Produced by Warner Bros International Television Production Sweden, Limbo follows three women – My (Helin), Ebba (Rakel Wärmländer) and Gloria (Louise Peterhoff) – who learn that their respective sons have been involved in a serious car crash that puts their friendship and priorities to the ultimate test.

The show is scripted by Emma Broström (Knocking) and Rakel Wärmländer and directed by Sofia Adrian Jupither (Helt perfekt).

Currently filming in Stockholm, the six-part series will premiere exclusively on Viaplay next year.

Filippa Wallestam, NENT Group chief content officer, said: “Every relationship has many layers, and Limbo shows how a single moment can turn even the closest friendships upside down.

“Unique Nordic storytelling is at the heart of our strategy to bring Viaplay to new markets around the world. Starring three of Sweden’s biggest screen talents, this is a poignant and compelling show of the highest quality that will be relevant to audiences everywhere.”

Viaplay, which first launched in Scandinavia, where it is the leading streamer, offers original series such as Pørni, Shadowplay, Honour and Swedish Dicks. It recently landed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, and is soon to launch in the US and the Netherlands.

The streamer is set to arrive in the UK in the second half of next year, before launching in Canada, Germany, Austria and Switzerland during 2023. This will take the total number of countries where Viaplay is available to 16, beating the target of 15 that NENT announced last November. As a result, the group has also upped its 2025 subscriber target to 12 million, including six million from overseas markets.
