NBCUniversal’s Peacock struts across Europe following roll-out on Sky

NBCUniversal-owned US streamer Peacock will roll out on Comcast-owned pay TV broadcaster Sky in Europe at no additional cost, as it begins its international expansion.

The agreement marks Peacock’s first international expansion since it launched in the US last summer, where over 54 million viewers have signed up to the SVoD platform.

Rolling out on Sky in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland later this year will give Peacock a further subscriber base of nearly 20 million people.

Peacock’s content library includes original drama Dr Death, which tells the true story of Dr Christopher Duntsch, who maimed and killed patients coming in for routine spinal surgeries, and dramas Suits and Saved by the Bell.

Dana Strong, group CEO of Sky, said: “Peacock will be a great addition for Sky customers with over 7,000 hours of content at no additional cost. This exceptional value-add is another example of the great ways we are innovating to bring more benefits to our customers from the synergies across Sky, NBCUniversal, and Comcast Cable.”

Jeff Shell, CEO at NBCUniversal, said: “By leveraging Comcast’s Xfinity platforms in the US, we were able to test and learn, quickly drive scale, usage and brand awareness of Peacock. We look forward to doing the same with Sky in Europe.”

In other news, Peacock has picked up all five seasons of Canadian sitcom Mohawk Girls from Quebec prodco Rezolution Pictures.

The sitcom tells the story of four modern-day Mohawk Native American women navigating work and relationships in the modern day. Each half-hour episode follows the women forging their own path through cultural norms. It is part of a wave of Native American content that includes Ed Helms-created Rutherford Falls and Taika Waititi’s Reservation Dogs.

Mohawk Girls was created and executive produced by Tracey Deer and Cynthia Knight. Executive producers include Catherine Bainbridge, Christina Fon, Linda Ludwick and Ernest Webb. It has aired on OMNI Television and APTN in Canada since 2014.
