Telemundo Streaming Studios, part of production powerhouse Telemundo Global Studios, will be based in Miami and led by the latter’s president, Marcos Santana.

The exec will continue to oversee all original scripted productions for the Telemundo network and other platforms, including international coproductions.

Launching with more than 35 projects in development and production, it is focused on developing and producing Spanish-language premium scripted content for Hispanic users of direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming services.

The projects include dramedy Armas de Mujer for NBCU-owned streamer Peacock and seasons four and five of El Marginal for Netflix, as well as the remake of Historia de un Clan, forthcoming seasons of El Recluso, a new version of El Diario de un Gigolo and action series El Immortal.

The studio is aiming to work with Hispanic talent drawn from the US, Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Argentina.

Telemundo claims to have been the leading provider of scripted Spanish-language content to D2C platforms since 2011, having delivered more than 14,000 hours of original content to the likes of Netflix, HBO, Hulu and Movistar, including 3,000 hours to Peacock when it launched last year.

According to US-based ratings agency Nielsen, Hispanics are on the leading edge of streaming adoption, over-indexing the total market, with four out of five Hispanics having access to streaming services at home.

In addition to developing and producing its own IP, the new studio will also offer production services to D2C platforms in search of “high-quality production expertise and capabilities,” NBCU said.

“As the premier media company serving Hispanics in the US, Telemundo is shaping a new era in Hispanic media with the creation of the first-of-its-kind streaming studio,” said Beau Ferrari, chairman of NBCU Telemundo Enterprises.

“Latinos are pacesetters of cultural and technological change. We are the leading Hispanic media company super-serving the Latinos of today with the best original, premium and culturally relevant content across all platforms.”
