NBC to reboot Weakest Link

The original UK version of The Weakest Link

US broadcast network NBC has teamed up with BBC Studios (BBCS) to reboot classic quizshow format The Weakest Link.

NBC has greenlit a 13-episode run of the series which will be hosted by actress Jane Lynch (Glee, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel). The series is set to go into production later this year.

The format originated on BBC2 in the UK in 2000 and ran there for 17 years. It sees contestants answer general knowledge questions to bank prize money across multiple rounds. At the end of each round, the contestants vote out who they perceive to be the weakest performer remaining, often to cutting remarks from the host.

The new US version will be produced by BBCS in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Ryan O’Dowd will serve as exec producer alongside Stuart Krasnow, who produced the original NBC run and will also serve as showrunner. Lynch also features as exec producer.

The format is distributed by BBCS and has been produced in 44 territories. A US version aired on NBC from 2001 to 2002 and then in syndication from 2002 to 2003.

Meredith Ahr, president, reality and alternative group at NBC Entertainment, said: “Weakest Link became an instant fan favourite when it first aired on our network, and we are excited to bring a fresh, new take to the timeless format.

“Jane Lynch has been a beloved staple in our NBC family for years, and her sharp wit and engaging personality will be the perfect match for this highly entertaining game show.”
