NBC puts brakes on Coach

US network NBC has cancelled its follow-up to classic US comedy Coach, having previously put in a straight-to-series order.

Craig T Nelson (Parenthood) was set to reprise his role as football coach Hayden Fox in the Universal Television comedy that originally ran on ABC for nine seasons until 1997.

A pilot had been filmed before NBC decided to pull the plug on the 12 other episodes it had ordered in March.

The update’s plot saw a now retired Fox called back to become the assistant coach to his own grown son, who is the new head coach at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania.

Universal Television is set to search for a new buyer for the project, according to US reports.
