Natural history series Asia and science exploration Solar System lead BBCS doc sales
Seven-part natural history series Asia
MIPCOM: BBC Studios (BBCS) has chalked up global multi-territory presales for its factual series Asia and sales for Solar System on the first day of the market here in Cannes.
Seven-part natural history series Asia is produced by BBCS Natural History Unit in coproduction with BBC America, ZDF and France Télévisions.
The series has chalked up 10 presales to broadcasters across Asia and Australasia and in Europe. Buyers include Australia’s Nine Network, New Zealand’s TVNZ, Dragon TV and Phoenix TV in China, Japan’s NHK, DR in Denmark, Norway’s NRK, Switzerland’s RSI, SIC in Portugal and Spain’s Movistar Plus+.
Asia will also air on BBCS-owned BBC Earth in Central and Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), the Baltics (Estonia) and the Balkans (Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia); Southern Europe (Malta, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey); and South Africa. It will also screen on BBC Nordic and BBC Nordic+, Sony-BBC Earth in India and on BBC Player in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.
The series is the first major BBC wildlife series to focus on the vast continent. Filmed over almost four years and using the latest techniques, it charts landscapes and wildlife ranging from the Gobi Desert to the jungles of Borneo, the polar wilderness of Siberia to the coral seas of the Pacific Ocean, featuring previously unseen behaviour.
Meanwhile, landmark science series Solar System (5×60’), a BBC Studios Science Unit Production with Nova/GBH for the BBC and PBS, has so far sold into nine countries: Australia’s ABC, HRT in Croatia; AMCNI CNE for Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia; France Télévisions; ZDFinfo in Germany; Sky Italia; and Movistar Plus+ in Spain.
The series will also be available on BBC Earth in the same territories as natural history series Asia.
Solar System charts journeys through our solar system’s planets and moons, uncovering daily events taking place and featuring content from NASA’s Jupiter probe Juno.
The cutting-edge technology and storytelling narrative deployed in both Asia and Solar System will “inspire viewers and transform the way in which they think about the world,” commented Nick Percy, president of global markets at BBCS.
Other BBCS natural history titles launching at Mipcom this week include Big Cats 24/7 (6×60’) and Expedition Killer Whale (1×60’), both coproduced by BBCS Natural History Unit with PBS.
