Nat Geo studies noughties tragedies

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has commissioned a special from ITV-owned prodco Twofour about tragedies that shook the world in the 2000s.

The 2000s’ Greatest Tragedies will feature first-hand accounts and eyewitness testimonies from those who experienced events such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the South Asia Tsunami.

The show will air on NGCI’s channels next month in 170 territories and 45 languages.

“It was sobering to be reminded how the 2000s would begin with such great optimism before these tragedies left the world in a much darker place as the decade would draw to a close,” said Kent Upshon, executive producer at Twofour.

The prodco is part of the Twofour Group, 75% of which was last month acquired by UK broadcaster ITV for an initial cash consideration of £55m (US$86m).
