Mr Selfridge rings up Euro sales

Broadcasters in France and Germany have picked up hit drama series Mr Selfridge and Rectify from distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVSGE).

Sony Entertainment Television in Germany has taken pay TV rights to the first two seasons of period drama Mr Selfridge and will premiere the show in April.

The series, from ITV Studios, revolves around the famous Selfridge’s department store in London during the early 20th century and has already been sold into more than 150 countries.

Meanwhile, Franco-German broadcaster Arte has acquired rights to the debut season of Sundance Channel’s first wholly owned drama series, Rectify.

The story follows a former death row inmate, released after 19 years thanks to a DNA breakthrough in his case, who returns to his home town where he was convicted of a rape and murder.

It was recently sold to SBS in Australia and has already aired on Sky in Germany and Sundance Channel in France. A second season is due to debut in the US this summer.

Tobias de Graaff, director of global television distribution for ITVSGE, said the long story arcs of both shows had proven popular with viewers and helped sales.

De Graaf added that free and pay TV audiences were “increasingly keen to watch world-class drama that unfolds over an entire series rather than an episode.”
