Moominvalley prodco Gutsy teams up with Lime Pictures for drama hybrid

Beyond Nature uses both live-action and animation

Finnish kids’ prodco Gutsy Animations, known for YLE’s Moominvalley series, is developing its first adult-targeted drama series, titled Beyond Nature.

The 6×50’ psychological drama series is a collaboration with the UK’s Lime Pictures and combines live-action and animation.

In the show, Finnish-UK artist Stella returns to Finland from the UK attempting to reconnect with her roots and sees visions based on Lapland’s mythology that unveil a danger to mankind.

Gutsy Animations has also attached writers Jessica Ruston (Harlots, Young Wallander), Kevin Rundle (Casualty, EastEnders) and Phoebe Éclair-Powell (Two Weeks to Live, Hollyoaks) to the project.

Additionally, Gary Carter has been tapped as a consultant with a remit focused on sales and development, specifically to spearhead the studio’s move into adult-skewing drama. He previously held senior creative and leadership positions at Endemol, Fremantle, Shine and Endemol Shine.

Based on Katariina Souri’s novel Pohjan Kosketus, Beyond Nature is created by Gutsy Animations’ chief creative officer and founder Marika Makaroff and Paavo Westerberg (The Violin Player). The series is set to be shot in the UK and Lapland.
