The deal covers all global territories excluding the Nordics, the Baltics and Poland, where the series is set to premiere on NENT Group’s streaming service Viaplay on November 28, and the Netherlands and UK, where it will premiere on Viaplay next year.

Created and written by US showrunner Adi Hasak (Shades of Blue), the 8×30’ series stars Anna Friel (Marcella) as a Kansas City police officer surrounded by headstrong men who are convinced she is losing her mind.

The show, produced by Viaplay Studios and Adi TV Studios, was filmed in Stockholm earlier this year. It is directed by Steve Shill (The Wire) and Johan Brisinger (Suddenly), with Cecilia Norman Mardell producing. Series co-writers are Paula Killen, Josh Azouz and Clare Siobhan Byrne.

The Box also stars Olivia Grant (Stardust), Letitia Hector (Venus vs Mars), Peter Stormare (American Gods), Alexander Karim (Zero Dark Thirty), Helen Behan (The Virtues), Nina Yndis (Peaky Blinders) and Shaq B Grant (Lynn + Lucy).

The announcement of the deal comes on the heels of a multi-year deal between NENT Group and MGM, which will see the companies develop and coproduce six English-language original series for Viaplay. All six projects will be shown exclusively as Viaplay Originals throughout the Nordics, the Baltics, the Netherlands and Poland, with MGM handling distribution in the rest of the world.
