Through the deal, MGM Alternative and Rh Negative will develop and produce unscripted shows focused primarily on true crime, docuseries and game genres.
The companies are currently in development on Squad Games (working title), a competition series loosely based on the Hall-starring 2017 comedy feature Girls Trip. The unscripted series will see celebrities and their real-life best friend go on an exotic getaway where they compete in wild challenges.
In addition to Girls Trip, which grossed around US$140m on a budget of US$19m, Hall has starred in movie franchises such as The Best Man and Think Like a Man as well as the first four Scary Movie films.
As a producer, through Rh Negative, she has worked on titles such as the mega-church mockumentary comedy Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul, in which she starred alongside Sterling K Brown. In addition, she starred in and exec produced the Prime Video occult drama Master and stars in the upcoming sci-fi rock opera O’Dessa.
MGM Alternative, which has been the subject of sale speculation in recent months, produces a wide range up unscripted titles including The Voice (NBC), Survivor (CBS), Shark Tank (ABC), Beat Shazam (FOX), Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? (Prime Video) and the Gladiators franchise. In addition, Amazon MGM Studios is the parent entity of Evolution Media, which produces several instalments of the Real Housewives franchise and Vanderpump Rules, as well as On Patrol Live (Reelz) producer Big Fish Entertainment.
“Ever since we saw Regina Hall co-hosting the Academy Awards two years ago, we knew she had something special that would resonate with reality fans,” said MGM Alternative president Barry Poznick.
“Her humour, honesty, creativity and style of storytelling make her a perfect partner as we continue to expand MGM Alternative’s slate of premium unscripted programming.”
