Raza Brava aims to examine football’s place in society

The Mediapro Studio Distribution and Wild Sheep Content will take the new Chilean series Raza Brava, created by International Emmy winner Hernán Caffiero, to international buyers.

Based on real events surrounding a notorious group of supporters of the iconic Chilean club Colo-Colo, the show is the first drama to depict a real Latin American football club.

The first footage of Raza Brava will be unveiled at Iberseries & Platino Industria on October 1 as part of the Iberscreenings section.

The series is being produced by DeCulto, Caffiero’s new label, in coproduction with Chilean post-production house Atómica Group, Erik Barmack’s Wild Sheep and The Mediapro Studio, with support from Chile’s CNTV fund.

It also has the backing of Colo-Colo, which boasts more than nine million fans and is celebrating its centenary this year.

“Raza Brava is a story that, while set against the backdrop of football, speaks about who we are as a society: our loyalties, contradictions and dreams. It was born in Chile but resonates anywhere sport and popular identity become a mirror of life itself,” said Caffiero, who won an International Emmy in 2018 with his shortform series Una Historia Necesaria and was nominated in 2024 for La Vida de Nosotras.

For Barmack, founder and CEO of Wild Sheep Content, which is part-owned by The Mediapro Studio, the drama captures the passion of football while telling a story that goes well beyond sport.

“Collaborating with Hernán and his team on a project so deeply rooted in Chilean culture, yet with universal themes, is a privilege, and we look forward to sharing it with audiences worldwide,” said the former VP of international content at Netflix.

Beyond football as a universal language, the series reflects human emotions and conflicts that transcend cultures and generations. It is a borderless drama that connects with the essence of our human condition.”

Raza Brava follows Carlos ‘Barti’ Aguilar, a young man from a working-class neighbourhood who rises to lead the Garra Blanca, Colo-Colo’s infamous supporters’ group, in a world of violence, crime and corruption.

It stars Gabriel Muñoz in his first lead role, alongside Karla Melo Melo (El Reemplazante) and David Gaete (Matar a Pinochet), with thousands of fans appearing as extras at Santiago’s Estadio Monumental and other locations in the Chilean capital.

The story, based on real events in Santiago, uses football as a backdrop to explore loyalty, betrayal, family, identity and resilience. Set between the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in the 1980s and the early 2000s, Raza Brava “goes far beyond its setting thanks to its universal themes that transcend borders and local contexts.”
