Tatxo Benet, president and CEO of Spain’s Mediapro Group, is leaving the company after reaching an agreement with SouthWind, the conglomerate’s majority shareholder.

The news was announced by the company and communicated to Mediapro teams during a general meeting on Tuesday in Barcelona.

“I’m sure that this new phase, which none of the three founders are now part of, will bring us as much success as the more than 30 years we’ve had, which have made Mediapro Group, a company born and raised in Catalonia, a global leader,” Benet said when announcing his departure.

“I’m left with the experience I’ve accumulated and the talent and human qualities of the more than 55,000 professionals who have worked for the group.”

Benet joined Mediapro in 2000, partnering with Jaume Roures and Gerard Romy after a long career in the Spanish audiovisual sector, during which he worked at Diario de Lérida, El País and El Periódico de Catalunya. He was part of the founding team of Televisió de Catalunya (TVC), directed the Olympic Channel and served as general director of Audiovisual Sport.

Mediapro has not announced who will succeed Benet, although Spanish media outlets, such as La Vanguardia, report that the position will be filled by former Movistar director Sergio Oslé.

Mediapro closed 2024 with revenue of €1.07bn (US$1.23bn) and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of €182m. The company has nearly 7,000 employees across 50 locations in 28 countries and is the parent company of The Mediapro Studio.

Benet’s departure comes after Roures left the group in October 2023. Laura Fernández Espeso has been the company’s MD since the beginning of this year.
