Masked Singer UK to return in 2021

The second season of the UK’s The Masked Singer will start filming later this year ahead of the entertainment show returning to ITV in 2021.

UK stand-up Mo Gilligan will replace US actor Ken Jeong (The Hangover) as a regular panellist on the show due to current restrictions on international travel as a result of the pandemic.

Jeong will soon complete filming on season four of the US version of the show, which airs on Fox and has returned to production with Covid-19 safety protocols in place.

Filming on the UK version’s second run is due to begin this autumn, with host Joel Dommett returning alongside panellists Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.

The format sees 12 celebrities don flamboyantly elaborate character costumes to conceal their identities while they sing, with viewers and a celebrity panel attempting to work out who they are.

“I hope when things start to normalise I can return and offer my expertise on all things British, like the Australian Open. Please take care, be safe and, as the title of the show suggests, wear a mask,” said Jeong.

The UK version is produced by Bandicoot TV, part of Argonon Group, and the executive producers are Derek McLean, Daniel Nettleton and Claire Horton.

It is based on the South Korean format of the same name from MBC and has also been remade in countries including Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, Germany, Mexico and France.
