Mamen Casal joins ex-Netflix execs at N&L after leaving Spanish prodco Ficción

Mamen Casal, the former head of sales and international affairs at Spanish prodco Ficción, has joined N&L Films, the production company co-founded by former Netflix execs Juan Mayne and Jeff Glaser.

Casal, who left La Coruña-based Ficción after over a decade earlier this year, told C21 she has joined Madrid- and Mexico City-based N&L as a producer.

N&L was founded by Mayne and Glaser, both of whom previously worked at Netflix, in 2023 with a focus on films. Shortly after setting up N&L, Mayne joined SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture from Comcast’s Sky and Paramount Global, as regional content director for Iberia.

Casal had been with Ficción for over a decade, joining as a sales agent before becoming head of sales and international affairs in 2021, while she has also served as production director.

Ficción (3 Roads, Unauthorised Living) has recently worked on series such as Ponto Nemo, coproduced with RTP in Portugal, Amazon’s Prime Video in Iberia and Lisbon-based Ukbar Filmes.

It followed an oceanographic expedition of scientists and the Spanish Navy investigating an island in the South Pacific when a storm sweeps them off course to another remote island, putting their survival skills to the test.

It was also behind Spanish-language thriller Operación Marea Negra, which was acquired by broadcasters and platforms in more than 60 markets, having been made for Prime Video in Spain.

Inspired by real events, it followed three companions as they attempt to cross the Atlantic in a homemade sub carrying more than 3,000 kilos of cocaine.

On leaving Ficción, Casal said: “I’m deeply thankful for the trust, the people and the many projects shared along the way. Ficción has been the place where I learned almost everything I know and it will always be an essential part of my professional and personal journey.

“The industry is evolving fast, and while that brings its challenges, it also opens the door to new ways of creating, collaborating and telling stories. It feels like the right moment to stay open, curious and positive about what comes next. This is not a goodbye, but a see you soon.”
