Louis Theroux series leads BBC Studios’ new multi-genre slate for US buyers

Sitcom Alma’s Not Normal will be offered to US buyers

BBC Studios (BBCS) is bringing a multi-genre content slate to buyers in the US, including unscripted shows Louis Theroux: Forbidden America and comedy series Alma’s Not Normal.

The commercial arm of the UK pubcaster will shop kids’ titles Nove Jones (10×24’, Jam Media), which follows a teen pop star as she travels the universe in the Jefferson Spaceship, and maths-centric Number 1 Newton Ave (26×7’, CBeebies).

On the drama front, BBCS is launching sales for Danny Boy (1×90’), a war drama starring Toby Jones, and Make Me Famous (1×60’), which explores the impact of newfound fame on reality show contestants and their families. Both projects are produced by Expectation Entertainment for BBC.

Comedy series Alma’s Not Normal (6×30’), also produced by Expectation Entertainment, follows a working-class woman dreaming big in a small town. BBCS is also shopping Ladhood (6×22’), a coming-of-age sitcom exploring the adolescence of writer Liam Williams. The series is a BBCS production.

On the documentary slate are three projects produced by UK prodco Mindhouse: Sex Actually with Alice Levine (3×50’) for Channel 4, about couples pushing sexual boundaries; The Bambers: Murder at the Farm (4×45’) for Sky Crime, a docuseries about the UK’s notorious White House Farm massacre; and Joe Wicks: Facing My Childhood (1×60’) for the BBC, about the life and childhood struggles of the fitness guru.

Factual entertainment series Louis Theroux: Forbidden America (3×60’), again produced by Mindhouse for BBC Two, is also on the slate. The project sees Theroux traveling across the US to meet fascinating and sometimes troubling content creators.

Elsewhere in documentaries, BBCS is shopping House of Maxwell (3×50’, produced by Expectation Entertainment for BBC Two), about the downfall of disgraced media mogul Robert Maxwell; Madame Tussauds: The Full Wax (1×50’, produced by Parable Productions for ITV); and Tareena: Return From ISIS (1×50’, produced by Uplands TV and ACL production for ITV), which follows a young British woman who took her young son to join ISIS in Syria.

“We head into discussions with our US clients armed with the very best of BBC Studios’ content,” said BBCS executive VP of content sales Dina Vangelisti, who joined the company last year.

“As ever, the storytelling is at the top of its game with a rich range of subjects and tone. We’re excited to see these launch to a US audience.”
