Lionsgate, Redbox Entertainment strike two-way distribution agreement

Tom Hardy in Capone

US studio Lionsgate and entertainment company Redbox have struck a multi-year deal that will see the two distribute each other’s content.

Lionsgate will shop entertainment titles from US-based Redbox, a former kiosk DVD-rental firm-turned-video-on-demand platform.

Redbox Entertainment films include: Capone, starring Tom Hardy; Shadow in the Cloud, starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson; and SAS: Red Notice, with Sam Heughan and Ruby Rose.

The firm expects to release 36 original movies annually, including upcoming releases The Last Son, Bandit and Muti.

The deal will also see Redbox add film and TV series from Lionsgate’s 17,000-title library to its AVoD and FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) services.

Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution at its motion picture group, said: “Lionsgate’s longstanding partnership with Redbox has created significant value for both our companies. That collaboration has evolved into a multi-faceted distribution relationship across home entertainment, SVoD and AVoD platforms that allows us to continue to diversify our content offering to our consumers.”
