Liberty plots Chellomedia sale

US cable giant Liberty Global is reportedly planning to sell European cable channels group Chellomedia.

The deal could raise between US$800m and US$1bn, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Chellomedia is the content arm of Liberty and operates networks around the world such as The Horror Channel, plus a string of joint ventures including cobranded CBS channels. Last year, it acquired a package of MGM channels and bought out Cosmo TV in Latin America.

Chellomedia also announced in January that it had launched a Latin American arm to manage the distribution of its pay TV channels in the region.

Liberty will complete a £15.8bn (US$24.6bn) deal to buy Virgin Media in the UK next month and the firm acquired a 12.65% stake in Dutch cable company Ziggo for US$808m in March.
