Lat Am remake for Breaking Bad

UPFRONTS: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has confirmed a deal to produce a local version of AMC drama Breaking Bad for Latin American audiences.

The US studio has partnered with Colombia’s Teleset to adapt the series into an original show called Metástasis. SPT confirmed this is the first local version of Breaking Bad.

The show has been cleared in “most major Spanish-speaking markets,” said SPT, including Univision’s UniMas channel in the US. The cast includes Diego Trujillo (El Capo, A Corazòn Abierto), Roberto Urbina (Che, Correo de Inocente”), Sandra Reyes (El Cartel, Pedro el Escamoso), and Julián Arango (El Cartel, Betty la Fea).

”Critics and audiences love Breaking Bad and its original take on the drug dealing business,” said Angelica Guerra, senior VP and MD of production, Latin America and US Hispanic for SPT. “It is a very relevant story for all audiences.”

Breaking Bad is in its fifth and final season on AMC, having won seven Emmys, four Writers Guild Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Directors Guild of America Award. The original show airs on AXN across Lat Am.

Localising scripted hits is a major line of business for SPT, with the studio turning out local versions of comedies like Married With Children in 12 countries, Everybody Loves Raymond in five territories, The King of Queens in Bulgaria and Russia, and I Dream of Jeannie in India.

Univision is also lining up a Latin version of The CW hit Gossip Girl, set in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco. The series is a coproduction between Univision and Mexican broadcaster Televisa.
