Write With Laika is a personalised digital assistant developed by video games writer and former Google and Facebook exec Charlene Putney and Austrian game studio Broken Rules co-founder Martin Pichlmair.

Dreamt up during the pandemic, Laika is an AI tool featuring a virtual writers’ room, staffed with computer-generated companions that offer feedback, editing suggestions, plot development and other input designed to aid scribes in the creative process.

With backing from early-stage investor Rockstart, Putney and Pichlmair are currently seeking further funding to expand the product, which they have already presented at events including Series Mania and through workshops across Europe.

But with stock market sentiment towards AI having cooled recently and questions being raised about the extent to which it will deliver on its promise, the pair spoke with Jonathan Webdale about their ambitions, how AI can be a positive for the film and TV industries, and why the technology won’t undermine the position of human scribes.
