Kirch bounces back with Disney deal

Despite this year's tribulations, Germany's Kirch Media has scored a major deal for German rights to Disney product, its first major licence since filing for bankruptcy protection last April.

Under a multiyear package deal inked between Kirch Media, Buena Vista International Television and the ProSiebenSat.1 Group, the insolvent media giant gets free-TV rights to a slate of Disney film and TV titles. The product will all come from Disney and subsidiaries Touchstone, Miramax and Dimension.

The pact covers between 20-30 theatrical movies a year, various telefilms plus up to four TV series a year, to air on German commercial networks ProSieben, Sat.1 and Kabel.1, still controlled by Kirch.

Specifically, ProSieben will air ABC action drama Alias and NBC sitcom Scrubs from 2003. The net also gets a Sunday afternoon Disney film block and a Saturday Disney Club toon bock. Among the toon titles are Tarzan & Jane and Buzz Lightyear.

Among the films covered by the deal are Signs, Sweet Home Alabama, Santa Claus 2, Pocahontas 2 and Peter Pan – Return to Neverland.
