Key buyers investigate S4C’s Welsh crime drama The One That Got Away

Welsh crime drama The One That Got Away (aka Cleddau) from BlackLight TV

MIPCOM: Welsh crime drama The One That Got Away (aka Cleddau) has been acquired by a handful of broadcasters here in Cannes, in a series of deals brokered by Banijay Entertainment’s distribution arm Banijay Rights.

Produced by Banijay UK-owned prodco BlackLight TV for Welsh-language pubcaster S4C, the English-language version of the bi-lingual production has gone to BBC for BBC Wales, BBC Four and BBC iPlayer, Swedish pubcaster SVT, Irish pubcaster RTÉ and Warner Bros Discovery in New Zealand.

The six-part psychological thriller, which launched as Cleddau on S4C on October 13, follows a female detective inspector, played by Elen Rhys (The Mallorca Files, Craith/Hidden), who teams up with her ex-lover played by Richard Harrington (Y Gwyll/Hinterland) to solve the murder of a nurse in a Welsh coastal town.

The series was written by Catherine Tregenna (Law & Order UK, Lewis, DCI Banks) and supported by the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.

Chris Stewart, senior VP of sales for the UK and Eire at Banijay Rights, who brokered the BBC deal, said the sale helped showcase the strength in Welsh storytelling and helped “bring the best in Welsh drama to a global stage.”
