Kate Phillips appointed permanent BBC content chief

BBC director of unscripted Kate Phillips will replace Charlotte Moore as the UK pubcaster’s chief content officer on a permanent basis.

Kate Phillips

Phillips was appointed interim chief content officer in March after the shock announcement in late February that Moore would be stepping down to become CEO of The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures and exec VP and creative director at Sony Pictures Television’s International Production Group.

Phillips has served as director of unscripted since 2022, responsible for formats including Strictly Come Dancing, The Traitors and Gladiators, before which she was director of entertainment commissioning for five years.

The exec has worked at the Beeb for 12 years, also previously acting as controller of BBC One, controller of entertainment and creative director of formats at BBC Worldwide, now known as BBC Studios.

The BBC’s director-general Tim Davie confirmed Phillips’ appointment to staff today. He said: “Kate’s passion for delivering world-class content to our all audiences shines through in everything she does.

“Her experience with the BBC spans over 12 years and in that time she has brought innovation, outstanding creativity and an absolute focus on our audiences. She has a fantastic record of delivering creative hits which embody the best of the BBC.”

Phillips said: “Over the past few months, I have thoroughly enjoyed being more involved in the huge breadth of brilliant content that we produce across the UK and, of course, it’s been great getting to know so many new people. This is one of the best roles in the business at an incredible organisation and I can’t wait to get started.”
