Kaboom’s Diana tapes doc sells

Network Seven in Australia, NHK in Japan and Germany’s RTL are amongst broadcasters to have picked up a controversial documentary about Diana, Princess of Wales.

Diana: In Her Own Words was produced by UK prodco Kaboom Film & TV for Channel 4 and is distributed by London-based Scorpion TV. It features candid video recordings of the princess made by her voice coach Peter Settelen.

The show, a hit for C4 and its best rating doc in three years, has also been acquired by Prime in New Zealand, VTM in Belgium, SBS in the Netherlands, VG in Norway, South Africa’s Via 24, Odisea in Spain and Denmark’s TV2.

ORF in Austria, TVP in Poland and Chile’s TVN have also picked up the show, which is sold by UK documentary distributor Scorpion TV. It will have its US premiere tonight on PBS.

The doc attracted controversy when it aired in the UK last week, with critics saying the tapes did not belong in the public domain, but Channel 4 said they were an “important contribution to the historical record”.

It is one of a slew of projects currently airing looking back at the life of the princess, who was killed in a road accident in Paris 20 years ago this month.
