Jason Woliner comedy in the works for decade wins Peacock straight-to-series order

NBCUniversal-owned streamer Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to a “groundbreaking” show that director and executive producer Jason Woliner (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) has been shooting for over a decade.

The as-yet-untitled series mixes fact and fiction and will be executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg through their overall deal at Lionsgate.

In the style of Woliner’s work directing Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Peacock said the mysterious series would be “a groundbreaking project” that combines fact and fiction to tell a bizarre and incredible tale of a complex man on a remarkable journey.

Woliner is a writer, director and former child actor. He helmed hit comedy Borat Subsequent Moviefilm as well as episodes of What We Do In The Shadows, Nathan For You and The Last Man On Earth.

He was the showrunner and main director for all three seasons of Adult Swim’s surreal action comedy Eagleheart and is set to direct Guru Nation, a new series from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross for Paramount+.

Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal’s television and streaming division, said the series “begins with betrayal and quickly becomes an epic, hilarious, action-packed journey.”

Also executive producing are James Weaver and Loreli Alanis for Point Grey Pictures, Megan Ellison for Annapurna Pictures and Michael Sagol and Bert Hamelinck for Caviar.

“This show is unlike anything else you’ll see this year. This is one of the most bizarre, out-of-the-box shows I’ve ever worked on and I can’t believe we’re even getting to make it,” said Lionsgate Television executive VP and head of scripted development Scott Herbst.
